JLB Partners Team Building Results in Donation to Family Gateway

The tech industry is growing rapidly, continuously expanding and evolving as more and more technological marvels are made available to us. It’s an exponential development, and as a result, our educational system needs to adapt to these changes. However, not all students have access to the resources that can help foster an interest in STEM education, or to a curriculum that gives them an opportunity to excel. To counter this, affordable computers with coding tutorials are a great way of engaging youth in new and exciting ways.

JLB Partners took part in a corporate social responsibility experience, as part of their 2022 Leadership Summit EXCEED Fast Forward, to help bring the power of coding to children supported by Family Gateway. The result of their efforts was a generous donation of 6 personalized coding computers, complete with screen, keyboard, trackpad, and pre-installed coding tutorials. The event took place via web conference on January 20th, 2022.

JLB Partners worked with Impact 4 Good (www.impact4good.com), a company that focuses on team-building programs that give back to community. The program selected was called “Great Give Back Game Show - Computers 4 Kids Edition”, which has the goal of providing STEM education and coding resources to local youth! During the activity, approximately 65 participants competed in a challenging video trivia game show utilizing their computers and smart devices. Points were awarded for correct answers, as well as bonus points for the fastest correct answer! The points were tallied, and top scorers and the winning team was determined. However, the real winners were the children attending the Family Gateway After-school and summer camps where the computers will be utilized.

Family Gateway is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1986. Their mission is to provide stability and life-changing supportive services to families with children experiencing homelessness. Family Gateway provides services include assessments to determine what interventions a family needs, creative solutions to avoid a shelter experience (e.g., eviction prevention), emergency shelter, supportive housing, general and vocational case management, and education programming. Family Gateway understands the negative effects of homelessness on children and their development. Children experiencing homelessness are woefully behind their peers from an educational and social-emotional perspective. For this reason, Family Gateway offers a unique Education Program for families in their care. Through their Early Childhood Education Program, 100% of all our children ages 6 weeks to 5 years are offered a formal assessment with our Children’s Educational Case Manager and the opportunity to attend an early childhood education program or preschool through local partner agencies. Family Gateway also provides after-school and summer programming, tutoring, mentoring, homework assistance, and recreational activities.

Kathy Kidwell, Director Community Engagement of Family Gateway, joined the teleconference to thank the group and provided a word of gratitude to explain just how impactful their donation was. Following the event, she went on to add, “JLB has supported us every year in so many ways, I truly just wanted to personally thank each and every one of your for putting smiles on these children’s faces during such trying times.”
